1 Day WorkshopThe TOVA in Clinical Practice - Enrolment Form
1-Day-WorkshopThe-TOVA-in-Clinical-Practice
The TOVA (Test of Variables of Attention) has been used to assess sustained attention and impulsivity for over 20 years. Originally developed to help diagnose ADHD, and titrate medication, it has become a mainstay analysis tool for neurofeedback practitioners, and has been used as a measure of positive change as a result of neurofeedback training in numerous studies.
Recently, it has been upgraded to work easily in the Windows operating system environment (TOVA 8). The interface is much more efficient and windows compliant. The test itself has not changed - it remains a robust and reliable instrument - and when interpreted correctly, a very valid diagnostic tool.
In this workshop the technical aspects involved in setting up the TOVA, importing, exporting and managing data, and printing reports, will be briefly reviewed. However, the majority of the time will be spent exploring the TOVA variables in detail, and understanding them clinically.
In clinical practice, clients present with other issues in addition to ADHD. These include Anxiety, behaviour disorders, and Autistic Spectrum disorders, among others. Using the original TOVA interpretative strategies on these groups often leads to incorrect conclusions. A careful analysis of TOVA results for these groups has indicated clear and reliable patterns in the TOVA. This has increased the power of the TOVA as a diagnostic instrument, and helps inform neurofeedback training.
The results of this presenter's analysis on the TOVA will be presented, with interpretive strategies suggested. Illustrative case studies will be presented. Attendees are encouraged to bring TOVAs from their practices for interpretation.
- Development of the TOVA
- The basic TOVA variables
- Additional variables
- Standard interpretive strategy
- Limitations of the test as presented – IQ, comorbidities
- Extension of the TOVA to clinical criterion groups – Anxiety, Oppositional, Autistic Spectrum
- Development of an interpretive strategy and implications for Neurofeedback.
- Practice interpreting TOVAs – illustrative examples and TOVAs from attendees
- Brief comparison with the IVA – time permitting
Morning and afternoon tea are provided
